On September 2, 2010, Don Decker, Parks & Recreation Director for the City of Weston took on the additional role as President of the Florida Recreation & Park Association (FRPA), at the annual conference in Orlando. He will be leading 1,500 members which represent over 270 parks and recreation agencies in the state. A member of FRPA since 1999, Mr. Decker has served in previous leadership capacities including Director of the Southeast Region and Co-Chair of the State Conference. Don looks forward to heading the 20 member executive board on advocacy efforts, educational programming for industry professionals, and other initiatives outlined in the association’s vision plan.
Ready and looking forward to accepting his presidential appointment, being presented with the FRPA annual Achievement Award came as a great surprise to Don. Recipients are nominated by their peers, and the award honors an individual who has given special or unusual service to the Association, and who has furthered the parks and recreation profession on a state and national level. Don’s wife Laura and their two children, Tyler and Grace were in on the surprise and proudly looked on as he gratefully and as always, humbly, accepted this recognition.
In a press release issued by the FRPA, Executive Director Eleanor Warmack said, “Don Decker was selected to receive the Association’s prestigious Achievement Award because of his extraordinary contributions to advancing the field of parks and recreation. He has a passion for providing quality of life in communities through the State of Florida.”
According to City Manager John Flint, Decker’s appointment is a testament to his dedication to his profession and will provide great opportunities for him as well as the City of Weston.
