U.S.S. Jason Dunham Naval Ship Commissioning – November 13

WHAT: Official Commissioning Ceremony for the Navy’s newest guided missile destroyer, the U.S.S. Jason Dunham (DDG 109). Hosted and Organized by Navy League of the United States, Fort Lauderdale Council, in conjunction with other South Florida Area Navy League Councils

WHEN: Saturday, November 13, 2010, 10 a.m.

WHERE: Port Everglades, Pier 29

HOW: Free Limited seating open to the public by invitation. Contact Chuck Black, event chairman, for invitation application.

WHY: Marine Corporal Jason Dunham, 22, threw himself on a live grenade in April 2004 during Operation Iraqi Freedom in Karabilah, Iraq, sustaining massive injuries. He died eight days later. His selfless and heroic act, which saved at least two fellow Marines, was honored posthumously with the Medal of Honor in 2006 and will continue to be remembered as the United States Navy has named its newest guided missile destroyer the U.S.S. Jason Dunham (DDG 109).
