Western High students organize August 21 Food Drive

After seeing a story on a local TV station about how Feeding South Florida (formerly the Daily Bread Food Bank) is participating in the fight against hunger, 16-year-olds Heather Perry and Carley Schiffer, both sophomores at Western High School in Davie, decided to take action and planned a major food drive event. The Aug. 21 event benefiting Feeding South Florida will take place at The Shops at Stirling Plaza in Davie. The young ladies recruited all of the businesses in the strip mall in to participate in the food drive, which will feature a DJ, balloons, banners, a large tent, and a scale to weigh all donated food.

Feeding South Florida, a member of Feeding America, is the largest food bank in the state of Florida and serves Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Monroe counties. The not-for-profit organization distributes over 1.8 million pounds of food to the community each month.

“We’re excited that these young ladies took the initiative to plan this food drive,” said Judith Gatti, executive director of Feeding South Florida. “We encourage the community to get involved in the fight against hunger, and it’s very pleasing to know that members of the younger generation see the importance of this cause.”
